It's rare that you'll see me write about baseball. Can't stand the game. Let me take that back. I never really developed an appreciation for baseball. It wasn't until I became an adult that I was able to admit that hitting a fastball is, if not the hardest, one of the most difficult things to do in sports.
So as I'm flipping through the channels, I stop at the MLB.TV and start watching some kind of countdown show about the strangest moments in baseball. That's how I found out about a phenomenon called "10-Cent Beer Night."
TCBN is remembered in baseball history as the best/worst promotional idea in the history of the major leagues. The Cleveland Indians were playing the Texas Rangers on June 4, 1974. Struggling to sell tickets, the Indians decided to offer 8-oz cups of Stroh's for just a dime with the purchase of a game ticket.
Needless to say, fans got sh*tfaced, foolery ensued, brawls broke out in the stands and on the field, leaving the umpires no choice but to call the game and award the Rangers a victory by forfeit.
There's a place I used to go and get 10-Cent chicken wings - but 10-cent beers?!?! I got a dollar in my pocket. Just let me know ahead of time and drinks are on me.
