Below is video of the American basketball player formerly known as Allen Iverson being introduced to his new "hometown" crowd in Istanbul, Turkey. "Bubba Chuck" used to be a Sixer, a Nugget, a Piston, a Grizzly, a Sixer again, and now he's something called a Besiktas Cola! The look on A.I.'s face at 6:10 can best be described as indifferent. He's on another continent, listening to a language he doesn't understand, and staring out at fans to whom he has no real connection. We already know what happens when Allen hasn't bought all the way in to a situation. I don't know what to expect from this except that it's going to end - and probably badly. Maybe ESPN will show some highlights (lowlights) every now and then, but I'm going to tell myself that the ball player who did this no longer exists. That's the only way I can accept this strange and sad turn of events. It wasn't supposed to end this way. A player like him only comes around every so often and when he finishes his career, it's supposed to end at the pinnacle, not in oblivion. The man who crossed over Michael Jordan is now a modern-day Michael Ray Richardson. I didn't see this being his finale and I know Allen didn't either.
Here is the video.
This is how I feel about the situation.
A friend of mine attributes this as a move to secure his financial future. I would hate to think that he has gone broke after making millions.

@Brown - Yes, some like Stephen A. Smith suggest AI has alcohol & gambling problems, so money could be the motivation. Sad nonetheless.
ReplyDeleteHi! I saw your article about self-discovery on Technorati and I just had to stop by and say hello. I wrote my Master's thesis on how blogging helps stay-at-home moms form communities and identities, so I really liked reading what you had to write relating to that. Thanks!
ReplyDelete@Michemily - Thanks for reading the piece and a bigger thanks for surfing over to the blog. I really enjoy writing and think it's a powerful tool for readers and writers. Again: thank you.
